Mock Trial Team

The Alamance Community College Mock Trial Team is a premier co-curricular learning opportunity that provides students opportunities to develop valuable skills in argumentation, critical thinking, and professional communication in a simulated courtroom environment. Sponsored by the American Mock Trial Association (AMTA), approximately 600 teams from 350 of the nation’s top colleges and universities participate in a series of tournaments that culminate in a regional championship tournament each spring. In North Carolina, this includes Duke, UNC, Elon, Davidson, and many of the state’s other flagship educational institutions. Alamance is unique in being one of only two community colleges in the entire nation to take on the challenge of mock trial competition.

Team members begin work in early fall when the AMTA case is released. Students may have the opportunity to play the role of an attorney or a witness to the case. Attorneys develop direct and cross examinations of available witnesses, opening statements, and closing arguments. Witnesses are responsible for knowing the facts of the case, answering questions about them from attorneys, and using theatrical skills to authentically portray their character.

Participation in mock trial requires a significant time commitment. Practices occur three Saturdays a month from 9 am-12 pm, and tournament participation requires students be available for entire Saturday and Sunday in February.
