Photography Basics

Do you have an interest in photography? Maybe you just want to take better pictures with your phone but don’t know where to begin? This class is the place start! Once you learn the basics it won’t matter whether you are using an iPhone, an android or a Nikon, you can step up your photo game and learn how to capture those beautiful pictures you have in your mind!

If you have a camera, that’s great! If not, bring your phone. No phone? Come anyway and just enjoy learning the art of taking great pictures!

The Basics:

The basics that you will learn here are the same across all media styles-phone, camera, video, etc. Once you know the basics, the only thing that changes is the equipment.

 

Composition:

How to compose your picture so that it actually looks like the ones in a magazine!

Whether you are an artistic thinker or technical thinker, we can teach you how to not only compose your shot, but know which buttons to push, dials to turn and menus to navigate to help you achieve the look that you have in mind.

 

Lighting:

How to truly see light-the way your camera sees it and how to modify it to create the look you want to see.

Discover cost effective lighting techniques that will enable you to start being more creative and will open up a whole new world for you to explore!

 

Shooting Format and Editing basics:

Deciding which is the best format to shoot in and how to do basic editing to get the picture to look like you want.

 

Photography Styles:

This class will cover the basics of all styles-landscape, portraits, street photography, fashion and product photography.

 

Classroom style:

Are these just dry, boring lectures? . . . .NO!!
Although I might use some video illustrations (and give you links to research on your own) every class will be a hands-on learning experience!

You will truly learn your own equipment so that when you leave, it’s not just head knowledge but practical tips that will start transforming your photography experience!

 

Photography Intermediate

Take your photography skills to the next level with our Intermediate Photography class. You'll dive deep into the essentials of gear selection, learn about the best lighting techniques—including on and off-camera flash and multi-point setups—and explore various lighting modifiers like reflectors and softboxes. We’ll also cover how different lenses and affordable accessories can enhance your storytelling. Plus, discover how to frame your shots to craft a compelling visual narrative and explore advanced editing tools to bring your images to life.

 

Gear

What gear do you really need?

So, you’re finally getting the hang of taking pictures and you know what most of the dials, buttons, and menus do, but  how do you take your photo game up to the next level? Do you have GAS? (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) You are really itching to buy some new equipment and have been saving your hard earned dollars -but what really makes sense? You will learn how to make the smartest purchases for the direction you want to go with photography!

Lighting:

On camera flash, off camera flash and continuous lighting.
Multi-point lighting set ups
Using flash for “natural light” settings

Lighting modifiers:

Reflectors, diffusers, flags, soft boxes, beauty dishes and grids-what they are and how to use them.

Lenses:

Whether it’s on our phone or on our camera, different lenses will tell different stories. This class will teach you how to use which one and when.

Accessories and props:

No cost to minimal cost equipment and accessories that will help to make your photography journey more successful and more enjoyable.

Telling your story:

Whether you are just taking a selfie to share your life with the world, capturing your family activity to share with friends, planning your first release on National Geographic or shooting photos for your friends fashion blog . . . you are telling a story!
