The simplest way to define biotechnology is the integration of technology using biological organisms or cells to make a product. Modern biotechnology provides breakthrough products and technologies that;

  • Combat debilitating and rare diseases through cell and gene therapy
  • Helps to improve the lives of humans by creating advanced crops that use less water and can grow in all climates
  • Discovers cleaner energy through development of alternative fuels
  • Improves industrial manufacturing processes by introducing new technology
  • Advances our medical treatments through vaccine discovery and improved medications

 

A biotechnician is a professional who works in the field of biotechnology, applying principles of biology, chemistry, and technology to solve problems and develop products in various industries such as healthcare, agriculture, and environmental science. Biotechnicians may work in laboratories, assisting scientists in conducting experiments, analyzing data, and maintaining equipment. They may also be involved in tasks such as sample preparation, quality control, and documentation. Depending on their specific role and expertise, biotechnicians may work with a wide range of organisms, from microorganisms to plants and animals, and utilize various techniques such as genetic engineering, tissue culture, and molecular biology methods.

What is the approximate salary range for biotechnicians in this area?

According to the most recent publication from the NCBiotechCenter; the average starting salary is $51,142 for entry level roles - ranging from $45,900 in biomanufacturing to $69,500 in validation (WoW Report, 2023).

After Graduation

After graduation ACC Biotechnology graduates have the practical laboratory experience to prepare them for the workforce or to further their education at the university level. ACC has three articulation agreements with area universities to ensure credits earned at ACC transfer to a public university.

What Can You Do with a Degree in Biotechnology?

  • Cell Culturist- Growing cells for vaccine and therapeutic medications
  • Environmental Monitor/Microbiologist Technician- making sure contamination does not happen in manufacturing, microbial control
  • Biomanufacturing Associate- processing and manufacturing of drug products  
  • Laboratory Technician- Testing samples, running assays, and medical diagnostics
