Two individuals representing Alamance Community College (ACC) were honored with awards at the N4C Student Government Association (SGA) Spring Conference in Raleigh held March 21-23.
Katherine Hackney, an ACC student and SGA Vice President, was the recipient of the Dr. Michael Taylor Servant Leadership Award at the N4CSGA awards banquet for her commitment earlier this year assisting with relief efforts for the victims of Hurricane Helene in western North Carolina. Katherine was also recognized as a finalist and Region 3 winner of the Governor Robert W. Scott Student Leadership Award.
Gilbert Umberger, SGA advisor at Alamance Community College, was selected by members of the N4CSGA Executive Board and Advisory Board as the 2025 Advisor of the Year from the Central Division. Umberger is also Coordinator of Student Life and Engagement at the college.
The Dr. Michael Taylor Servant Leadership Award is given to a student whose work has enhanced the growth of others in their organization, increased teamwork and personal involvement, while helping the organization reach its potential. The student recipient of this award exemplifies a desire to lead by serving others in their community, on their campus, or in the community college system.
Katherine Hackney worked with the ACC FLORA Club and Animal Care Club to organize the collection of donations from students, faculty, and staff. She subsequently traveled to Blue Ridge Community College to deliver collected relief supplies to ensure the donations reached students, faculty, and staff most affected by the hurricane. Katherine’s actions exemplified her dedication to serving others and making a tangible impact.
During the conference, Hackney was also elected to serve as the N4CSGA Central Division Chair for 2025-2026. This fall Katherine will serve as SGA President at ACC, alongside Owen Myers, Vice-President, and Ruby Carbajal Cardoso, Public Relations Specialist.
